On A Journey Called Life ~ Dony McGuire

By Pam Griffin ~
The Destin Log  ~

Music began early in the life of Dony McGuire, composer of the 1984 Song of the Year, “Upon This Rock”.

McGuire began piano lessons at the age of five, at the insistence of his mother, and continued for 10 years.

“My family was very musical, so I would have to say they had quite an influence on me concerning a love for music,” McGuire told The Log.

McGuire credits five major composers — Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky — as influencing the way he composes music.

The youngest of seven children, McGuire began performing with his brothers at the age of four. They spent their early years singing in churches and concert halls on weekends and during the summer.

At the age of 11, McGuire composed music to lyrics his father wrote. He recorded that song, “He Will Provide”, many times.

At 16, McGuire left home to pursue a full-time career in gospel music and performed with many of the most popular groups of the day, including the legendary group The Downings…

HEART OF THE MATTER

Homecoming Magazine Article ~
by Tori Taff ~

Like mother, like daughter! It’s impossible to look at Reba Rambo-McGuire and not think of her late mother, the legendary songwriter Dottie Rambo. The family resemblance is strong, but not just in her wide smile and sweeping cheekbones — Reba, like her mama, is a born storyteller, and in our recent conversation from her home in Nashville, she uses her gift to lovingly paint a portrait of the Dottie only she knew, and of this season of grief she’s walking through.

Reba Faye Rambo was born in Dawson Springs, Ky., to 18-year-old Joyce “Dottie” Rambo and her husband Buck. Though Reba didn’t officially join the Singing Rambos until she was 12, there are radio recordings of her as young as 3 years old, accompanied by Dottie and Buck, belting out a cowboy hymn in perfect pitch. Growing up with a mother who wrote over 2,500 songs in the course of her career, it was only natural that young Reba began composing her own at an early age…

DOTTIE RAMBO REMEMBERED IN MUSIC CITY WALK OF FAME

From www.GospelMusicUpdate.com / The Judy Nelon Group ~

Nashville, TN – Nov. 18, 2011 - Dottie Rambo shined brilliantly with pen in hand, so it was a perfectly fitting tribute that she should receive a star on the Music City Walk of Fame on Sunday, November 6, 2011 in a ceremony honoring seven worthy recipients: Manuel (Clothes Designer), Dan Miller (Broadcaster), Dr. Bobby Jones (Gospel Artist), Dottie Rambo (Artist/Composer), Les Paul (Guitarist), Alan Jackson (Singer/Songwriter), and Kix Brooks (Artist/Songwriter/Broadcaster/Philanthropist).

Daughter, Reba Rambo-McGuire, received the star on her mother’s behalf. It was presented by friend and world-renowend producer Tony Brown whose musical roots began in the Christian music arena. Rambo-McGuire’s poignant words were nearly as beautifully stated as the lyrics to her mother’s songs. She expressed that her mother found a song in everything and in everything, a song. Rambo-McGuire shared, “My mom would hear that hammer we’re all hearing now in the distance, and she’d say, “Someone pass me a pen and a paper. That sound is part of the orchestra for the song God is about to have me write.” She continued. “My sweet mom even made my school assignment to memorize the Gettysburg Address into a melody and guess what? I did it!” She told how Rambo viewed the world, her lyrics and everything that God created as a musical score that God Himself intended for our enjoyment and His glory…

SGN SCOOPS INTERVIEWS RAMBO McGUIRE

BACK TO THEIR GRASSROOTS: A MOMENT WITH RAMBO McGUIRE ~
By Lorraine Walker of SGN Scoops Digital Magazine ~

Reba Dony Des Photo 1Rambo McGuire. The name is synonymous with brilliant, powerful lyrics, incredible vocals and unique style extending across the realm of Christian music. Dove and Grammy award-winning Reba Rambo-McGuire and Dony McGuire are today joined by The Rambos patriarch Buck Rambo, as well as children Destiny Rambo McGuire and Israel Anthem McGuire in Grassroots Rambos: the first in the Remembering the Rambos series. It’s a special moment in time for the family of the legendary singer/songwriter Dottie Rambo to celebrate her music and her life.

Dottie Rambo, known worldwide for her music, began her career as a young teenager, dedicating her life to Christ at age 12 and determining to use her talents solely for Him. At 16, she met Buck Rambo and they began touring as The Gospel Echoes, later to become The Singing Rambos. Their daughter Reba joined the group at age 13, creating the special sound of Dottie’s matchless alto, Buck’s country baritone and Reba’s soaring soprano. The Rambos presented Dottie’s songs to all who would listen, garnering many awards and paving the way for each member’s solo careers.

The songs of Dottie Rambo have been recorded by the likes of Whitney Houston, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and many other secular and Christian artists. Rambo’s personal website states that she wrote over 2500 tunes. After her tragic death in May 2008, many fans mourned the loss of this great artist and wondered if those magical Rambo songs, performed in the unique Rambo style, would ever be heard again.

With the release of Grassroots Rambos, Rambo McGuire has responded to Dottie fans and to their own desire of honoring this legend. The mix of bluegrass, country and gospel influences that inspired Rambo’s songs is heard again in this three-generation family band. The songs that made this lady a household name are brought into a modern-day, fresh sound that is delighting both old and new fans. More than that, the family desires that the driving force behind Dottie Rambo’s music, the great and redemptive power of God, be heard, seen and felt in every performance…
